What it is
Excavation contractors move earth: digging for foundations and basements, cutting a level house pad, trenching for water and power lines, putting in culverts, and shaping the ground so water drains away from buildings.
Grading levels and slopes the ground. On raw land it usually comes right after clearing.
A gravel driveway is often the first thing a rural property needs so trucks for the well, septic, and building can get in. A good one has a solid base, good drainage, and culverts where water crosses.

Questions to ask a contractor
- Is the price by the hour, by the cubic yard, or a fixed bid?
- For the driveway: how deep is the stone base, what stone sizes, and will you use fabric under it?
- Where will water go? Do I need culverts, and are they included?
- Do I need a permit to connect the driveway to the road? Who gets it?
- Will you call 811 before digging?
- Is hauling dirt off-site included, or is that extra?
- Are you insured?
FAQ
Do I need a permit for a new driveway?
Often, yes, if the driveway connects to a public road. The permit usually comes from whoever owns the road: the township, county, or state transportation department. Ask before work starts.
Why do contractors talk so much about drainage?
Water is the main thing that ruins driveways and foundations. A contractor who plans for ditches, culverts, and slope up front saves you repairs later.
Can excavation be done in winter?
Sometimes, depending on frozen ground and mud. Ask your contractor what they do in your area.
What is 811?
811 is the free national call-before-you-dig number. Utilities mark buried lines so no one hits them. Your contractor should call before digging. See call811.com.
