Storm shelter size and fit

Work out the minimum floor area FEMA calls for, then see which kind of shelter fits your home and family.

How big does it need to be?

Minimum usable floor area from FEMA P-320, for residential safe rooms of 16 people or fewer (FEMA FAQ, FEMA P-320). Plan room for wheelchairs, pets, and supplies too.

Which shelter fits my home?

Our suggestion based on the pros and cons on the types page (NerdWallet). A judgment call, not engineering advice; your installer and local code decide.
