What it is
On rural land, the plumbing starts outside. After the well is drilled, someone has to run a buried water line from the well to the house, and often on to the barn, the pasture, or the garden, deep enough that it won't freeze.
Rural plumbers install frost-free yard hydrants and automatic livestock waterers. The Spruce explains that for a frost-free hydrant to work, the drain valve at the bottom must be buried below your frost line, which varies by climate.
Inside, the pressure tank keeps water pressure steady. Pressure tanks overlap with well pump companies, and either may do the work. On the waste side, a plumber connects the house drain to the septic system; the septic installer handles the tank and drain field.
Long trenches are often dug by an excavation crew. Plan your water line, power line, and septic layout together so they keep the distances your county requires.

Questions to ask a contractor
- How deep will you bury the line for our frost depth?
- What pipe will you use from the well to the house and barn, and what size?
- Who digs the trench: you or an excavation crew? Is backfill included?
- For hydrants and waterers: where does the drain water go, and how do you keep it away from the well?
- Will the pressure tank be sized for the pump and the house? Can you check the pressure switch too?
- Who connects the house drain to the septic tank, you or the septic installer?
- Are you licensed where my land is, and is a permit or inspection needed?

FAQ
How deep does a water line from the well need to be?
Below your local frost line, so it won't freeze. That depth varies a lot by region. Ask your plumber or building department for the number where you live.
Is a frost-free hydrant really frost-free?
Only if it is installed right. The Spruce explains the drain valve must sit below the frost line, and water drains out of the standpipe when you shut it off.
Plumber or well pump company for a pressure tank?
Either may do it. Angi notes a handyperson or plumber is common for a straight swap. If the pump may also be failing, a well pump company can check the whole system.
Who connects my house to the septic tank?
It varies. Often the plumber runs the house drain out to the tank and the septic installer builds the tank and drain field. Confirm in writing who does which part, and check permit rules.
What do automatic livestock waterers cost?
It depends mostly on how far the water line must run and how deep. One farm writing in Mother Earth News paid nearly $7,000 for five waterers across 50 acres. That is one example, not a national average, so get local quotes.
